Literature Text

The sunlight entered through the window into the garage, used as bedroom, where Spark used to sleep at night, hitting his eyes. Spark, who was a dragon with blue scales that lived together with his human friend Bill, awoke, and before scrolling his wings like did every morning when waking up, had a vision of Bill at the entrance with a funny cone-shaped rainbow hat and a big smile in his face.
“Happy birthday Spark!”
The dragon, whose mind was still slowly connecting again with the world, asked:
“Happy…yawn...happy what, Bill?"
“Birthday!” The smile in his friend’s face became wider. “You know, the party we humans celebrate the day we become one year older! I just thought you’d like to celebrate it too.”
Spark became confused. “What do you mean? I myself don’t remember the precise day when I was born. I only know it happened in late summer, and it’s April right now…”
“I know, but today is the tenth anniversary of the day you and I first met” said “it’s like a birthday for me.”
Spark smiled too, revealing his big canines, as in dragon manners showing canines while smiling was a sign of affection. They had first met in the mountains present in that region, down the shore of a lake. The dragon was drinking and enjoying the first spring sunlight while Bill first appeared; they had made eye-contact for a long time, something that had amazed Spark since humans that had seen him usually got scared and run, and he didn’t know why. Bill instead seemed fascinated, and the two had slowly got closer to each other, and eventually had a long introducing conversation; they met many other times, and as time passed, they ended liking each other so much that one day they decided to live together, in a cottage in those same mountains, close both to a small human city and to zones frequented by dragons. After all, he decided, it was a nice gesture from his best friend.
“Thanks Bill” muzzled him “but how are you intended to celebrate? You know I can’t eat cakes, sucrose is dangerous for me. And I wouldn’t even be able to blow off a candle, I would only spit more fire…”
“Of course I know” Bill patted his nose in response “I organized everything. Let’s come out, our friends are waiting for us in the garden."
They went outside, walking to a meadow behind the house, where two people and one dragon greeted them warmly. “Happy birthday for our favourite dragon!” said chorused the humans.
“Hi Spark” greeted the other dragon, a white female called Nicia. “I know it sounds a bit stupid, but even we were glad to do this” added.
“It’s ok Nicia, I’m truly appreciating what you’re doing” assured him “Did you come alone?”
“Trikus and Zoroff are coming with your birthday cake” announced Angela, one of the humans “they should arrive in few minutes.”
Spark turned to Bill. “A cake? You said you organized everything…”
“Just wait, you will see” smiled again him.
After a while, two dragons, one red and the other one gray, came flying, transporting together a deer that was freshly killed. They landed in the garden and put it in the center. It had ten candles above.
“Hi Spark!” said Trikus “I hope you’ll enjoy this, we spent ages to learn how to insert candles with mouths without breaking them…”
Zoroff turned to the humans. “Don’t worry, we killed it just some minutes ago so it won’t stink for a long time.”
Spark couldn’t believe his eyes. Bill patted him saying: “What do you think? It should be good as a dragon equivalent of a cake.”
The blue dragon laughed with joy. “You’re very evil sometimes!” then his expression turned to worry. “But won’t our human friends feel uneasy if they see us eating it? I remember how you were disgusted when you watched me our first years…”
“That’s why I invited only our closest friends” his friend ensured him “those who have already been with you eating. Nobody will judge you, I guarantee it. And moreover, we’ll eat it too, although of course we’re going to cook our parts.”
Spark would have risked crying if he too was a man. “Th…thank you” blabbed. “Thank you very much!” and hugged his best friend with his wings.
Dennis, the other human, said excited: “Now light up the candles!”
“What?”
Bill explained contently: “This is a dragon birthday! Instead of blowing out candles, you light them up!”
Spark was astonished.
“Brilliant!” growled, even happier. “You’re amazing, Bill! I’m so glad to be your friend!” and turned his head to the deer.
“Make a wish, Spark” said Angela.
He made it mentally, remembering he should not declare it loud, and breathed a gentle fire to the candles, which now burnt cheerfully. All the others sang.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Spark, happy birthday to you!
I will offer a story inspired by this old comic: www.barnorama.com/wp-content/u… Reminding it, I thought that a dragon should be given candles to light up, not to blow off.
And yes, both the dragon and the human are the same from my previous short story "Sleeping with a dragon". I wouldn't mind making a series of short stories about their everyday life. You know, just to show up that a dragon doesn't necessarily need to be a mighty god-like creature like I see them portraited half of the times :)

D'aww, had to go back and reread these older Bill and Spark stories. I especially love the part about lighting the candles up.
